HISTORY OF YARAM ARTS

YARAM EMERGED IN THE LATE 1990S, WHEN WE MANAGED A COMMUNITY FOOTBALL TEAM AND BEGAN ORGANISING SPORTING TOURNAMENTS FOR THE AFRICAN DIASPORA COMMUNITY IN LONDON.

Our football team participated in various non-league competitions around the country and our successes on the pitch culminated in closing ceremony music celebrations at various East London venues – Palace Pavillion, Chimes and Visions.

Some of our players had been invited to professional football trials in clubs like Grimsby Town, Watford and Southampton F.C, with one of them progressing and eventually signed a premiership contract.

Notwithstanding, our passion for the arts gradually grew whilst we noticed a glaring need for the professional development of artists and audiences.  Through organic growth driven by love and passion for culture, we registered Yaram as a fully fledge organisation in the year 2000.

In our first decade since inception, we have toured the length and breadth of the UK with renowned African artists, engaging with diverse global music audiences.  We frequented historic venues like Jazz Cafe, Stratford Rex, Band on the Wall Manchester, The Buttermarket Shrewsbury, The Sage Gateshead and popular festivals such as North Shields, WOMAD and Africa OYE.
